My Most Anticipated Media of 2017

So I’m a little late to this list – plan was for this to go up at the start of the year but we all know how things go sometimes. 2017 has been a blur so far it seems, but as we step into the second month I felt it appropriate to finally share some of the things I’m most looking forward to in the coming months!

1. Mass Effect: Andromeda (March 21)
This game that I’ve been ready to love since it was first announced long ago is actually a mere two months away now! The long over adieu follow up to Bioware’s original Mass Effect trilogy, Andromeda follows a group looking for a potential new home far from their own galaxy. With every released trailer I’m more and more committed to my next space adventure and I may or may not have already started planning my Ryder internally.

2. Wonder Woman (June 2)
My whole life, before I ever even read a comic book, I’ve always loved Wonder Woman. It was pretty world changing for me, to see that there was a female superhero in the same league (literally) as household names Superman and Batman. Since growing up, my devotion to the Amazon warrior has only grown. While I was originally skeptical of Gal Gadot’s casting in the role, I have since come to trust her with it and so in combination with the directorial power of Patty Jenkins I am holding faith this film will save the DC film franchise.

3. American Gods (April)
Okay, I was a late comer to this one as well. I only just read the book by Neil Gaiman, upon which this tv series is based, last year, but I knew from the start I would be hooked. With an amazing ensemble cast including Ricky Whittle, Gillian Anderson and Orlando Jones plus Bryan Fuller of Dead Like Me and Hannibal running the show, I don’t think I’ll be disappointed when the show premieres this year.

4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May 5)
I loved the first Guardians, I would go as far as to say it’s my favorite of the Marvel films released thus far. The setting, characters, humor and music all made the film perfect for me and so it’s no surprise I’m really looking forward to the sequel! Also worth noting here is the mysterious and upcoming Telltale Games take on Guardians of the Galaxy that I will most definitely be playing.

5. Bill Nye Saves the World (April 21)
Growing up, there were two things a kid in my school most looked forward to (even for a nerd like myself who for the most part enjoyed my classes). The two most celebrated class viewings were of The Magic School Bus (which will be getting its own revival in the near future too) and Bill Nye the Science Guy. I loved Bill Nye – even on those days I’d been up way too late the night before working on a project and just wanted to sleep, I would stay alert if just to go Bill! Bill! Bill! It therefore goes without saying that I’m a big fan of the Bill Nye renaissance we’re in right now. I think now perhaps more than ever we need popular voices in science and I can’t wait to see what he and Netflix have in store.

6. Star Wars: The Last Jedi (December 15)
So this one is the farthest away out of everything on this list, but it is definitely one of the biggest. I loved The Force Awakens and the fresh spirit it brought to the franchise, but it was lacking in one thing: my favorite character in the Star Wars universe, Luke Skywalker. With that ending, I can’t wait to see how the story unfolds. Whether Luke is Rey’s father, becomes her Jedi master, or any other out there theory, I’m excited. Just please don’t pull a Han Solo on him. With the far too early loss of our beloved Carrie Fisher, the film will likely be an especially emotional ride, but one I feel fortunate that we will be able to experience.

7. Nancy Drew: Midnight in Salem (TBD)
So I gotta put a disclaimer out here first to say that the release date has not yet been confirmed for this game, which means it may not actually be a 2017 contender but my hope is that it will be. I’ve loved Nancy Drew since I was young. I grew up reading the novels and eventually playing the games Her Interactive makes to continue the girl detective’s legacy to this day. They’ve regularly produced consistently fun games for years now, but what makes this next upcoming release special is it’s seemingly the start of a new direction. It will be the first of their games to be made in Unity, something I feel will only improve the quality of the sleuthing I’ve come to enjoy!

8. Justice League (November 17)
I’ve already gushed about my love for Wonder Woman above, and given that she’s a major part of the team featured in DC’s Justice League I can’t not include the film here as well. I had mixed feelings on Batman vs. Superman, bordering more on the side of negative, but the best part to me were all the Justice League cameos included. Riding on the excitement of Wonder Woman in the summer, I’m hoping this will be a worthy follow up.

9. The Shannara Chronicles, Season 2 (TBD)
I was a bit slow to jump on the bandwagon for this fun take on high fantasy, opting to binge through the first season when it was released on Netflix, but I am glad that I finally did. Elves, mages, demons and more make appearances in this unique take on the genre that’s always fascinated me. With last season leaving off on some pretty steep stakes, I’m excited to see what comes next!

10. The Defenders (TBD)
So if you hadn’t already gathered it by now, I really like superheroes. The Netflix Marvel collaborations have been some of the best so far. While my interest is low in their more immediate venture of Iron Fist for reasons mainly consisting of a lackluster lead, I’m looking forward to seeing my favorites from Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage all come together for this series.
